The NCSU Upward Bound Program is looking for qualified professional summer staff to work for the Summer Academy Residential Program. The program provides academic and cultural enrichment for a preselect group of high school students. During this preparatory experience students will take high school academic courses, tour college campuses, and attend cultural sites and/or events. As a counselor for this summer experience, it is imperative to work along side the students and other faculty to ensure this is an overall successful experience.

Residential Summer Academy Counselor

Upward Bound is looking for Residential Summer Academy Counselors who can ensure the student’s safety, help them remain focused on their responsibilities, and serve as a supervisor for any on/off campus activities. Counselors will also serve as a role model and will always encourage the student’s personal and professional development.

Summer Counselor Responsibilities include:

  • Attend the Mandatory Orientation Session (Saturday, April 21, 2018)
  • Attend the Mandatory Training Session (Thursday, June 14, 2018 – Friday, June 15, 2018)
  • Communicate and work with other Upward Bound Staff
  • Address students’ behavioral issues
  • Ensure students are chaperoned at all times
  • Address/handle crisis issues in Residence Hall
  • Stay abreast of the schedules and any schedule changes
  • Monitor students’ curfew
  • Assist students with homework
  • Serve as a bus chaperon for select Thursday evenings
  • Complete other duties as assigned

 

Applicants should understand that this position does include a residential experience. Since summer staff will also be living on the campus of NCSU, the expectation is that you are “On-Duty” 24 hours a day. The SummerCounselor package includes free on-campus housing and a meal plan for the duration of the program.

Residential Bridge Coordinator

Upward Bound is looking for a Residential Bridge Coordinator who can ensure the student’s safety, help them remain focused on their responsibilities, and serve as a supervisor for any on/off campus activities. Residential Summer Science Instructor

Upward Bound is looking for a Science Instructor who is well-versed in Science instruction at the high school level.

Science Instructor Responsibilities include:

  • Instruct high school students in common core curriculum
  • Prepare lesson plan format for each scheduled Summer Academy enrichment class session
  • Submit time sheets, class rolls, student evaluations andlesson plan format at the end of the Academic session
  • Report to and collaborate with the Academic Coordinator
  • Maintain a safe environment for all students
  • Meet professional obligations through efficient work habits including meeting required deadlines, attending staff meetings as scheduled, and implementing instructional activities that contribute to a climate where students are actively engaged in meaningful learning experiences.
  • Other duties as assigned that aid in the overall service delivery model for the Upward Bound Program.
